My students are passionate and apathetic, sometimes about the same topic. They are sometimes tired, and they are somtimes bouncing off the walls. They don't always want to talk to answer my questions, but they can't wait to tell me what they think about something.
They are an enigma, and I enjoy the challenge of figuring out the puzzle.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. We are a Title I school, and most of our students qualify for free lunch. We are a racially diverse community. I have many first-generation English speakers. I have several who will be the first in their family to graduate high school. My students work well together, support each other, and argue like brothers and sisters. My classroom is a great place to be!
Middle school students are growing and changing in a way no other group of students does. Their bodies are changing into adult bodies, and it is often hard for their brains to keep up in order to learn. They simply find it hard to both sit still and listen. For many of my students, when this age of change is combined with the additional challenge of ADD, ADHD, or anxiety, focusing on schoolwork is nearly impossible.
Bouncy Bands are amazing in a classroom.
I've been fortunate to have them in my room for several years, and the students really enjoy them. Some of my old ones are worn out and due for replacement. Additionally, I'd love to add some new fidget helpers to my arsenal as well, and that's where the stress balls, fidget tubes, and hand puzzles come in. I can just imagine handing one of these to my wiggly students and seeing them settle down and begin to listen. And in this reading classroom, better listening can only lead to better reading skills! It will be great!
