Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Since our school is not a neighborhood school, the 750 students come from all over the district. The scents are a very diverse population and for some of them, the garden projects are their only outdoor, 'nature' time. By participating in the gardening project, Mason Bees, they learn how to care and protect the environment through pollination. The garden is used for a variety of functions, and students take pride in maintaining this area of the school.
Being able to learn , in a hands-on lesson, the importance of pollination and the Mason Bees, is vital to the Earth, the environment, and the life cycle.
Having a Mason Bee habitat will help the students learn, first hand, how the bees help the pollination process, at a faster and safer rate than honeybees, and see it in action.
The students will be able to start from scratch - building the habitat, creating the nesting tubes, and adding in the pollinators. From there the students will be able to watch the bees pollinate the garden.
My Project
With the honeybees declining, the Mason Bees are non-aggressive, small, and high effective in pollinating. They can visit an average of approximately 1600 flowers a day. The bees are non destructive, and do not burrow holes into things.
By integrating the Mason Bees and their habitat into our school garden, the students will be able to see first hand the pollination process, and the habitats of the Mason Bees.
This process will help our garden continue to blossom and grow plants, usually dependent on the honey bee. The bees are native to North America, and will help the students understand the importance of taking care of nature, and understand the life cycle of plant growth.
