Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to the "Busy Bees" Pre-K classroom at Octavius V. Catto Community School! It may look as if we are "only playing" in our class, but we are continually discovering and studying through our play and ALL of our students have "learned" to love attending school. A great introduction to academics!
We are an energetic class (aren't all Pre-school classes?) which includes students with Special Needs and a large number of Bilingual/English Language Learners, as well as our general education kiddos.
Many of our urban students have never attended school before this school year, therefore, Reading and Literacy is a top priority in our classroom to help prepare everyone to enter kindergarten come September. This current school year 12 of my 15 students' primary/home language is Spanish so we are working on learning our academic "basics" in both languages, and a rug with bilingual activities will help our children to succeed.
In addition to academics, we are introducing our students to Social-Emotional skills that enable our children to be more independent and confident about themselves. They are learning that they are an important part of our Catto school community.
My Project
The classroom rug will be used consistently throughout our day both during large group instruction (circle time/Morning Message) and also during small group/free-choice centers as our classroom library center. Our current rug is quite small, worn, and dirty (adhesive stuck on from a previous class which attracts dirt). The rug is too small to accommodate our entire class, and because our students are ages 3-5, we always sit or recline directly on the carpet for activities without the use of chairs or desks.
The wide couches will be utilized by multiple students in our library area. The more comfortable or homey the reading area is, the longer our kiddos will stay in this area reading and participating in Literacy activities. This will also encourage them to read at home on their couches with their families. The Big Book Activity Stand will not only store our bulky large books, but support an open book for our tiny students so they may read without one-on-one teacher assistance.
Our classroom is already very blessed because it is an academic atmosphere in which to learn and succeed where all students and teachers are accepted and loved, even on our "worst" days!
We hold the highest expectations for all of our kiddos and know that they can achieve whatever they strive for, or whatever their families and teachers dream and wish for them. Any help from you is greatly appreciated and know that our "busy bees" will benefit from your generosity. A heart-felt "Thank you".
