I teach Kindergarten students who are very enthusiastic and inquisitive learners. Their backgrounds are varied, from affluent to poverty level. Some are ESOL students, and some have special needs. Our school is large with over 900 students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Our diverse population makes us special. Our curriculum focuses on student inquiry-based learning with a global perspective. For this age, hands-on learning is essential. They love to play in centers to learn financial literacy through a grocery store, create in an art center, build in a block and game center, listen to stories on a computer, read books in the reading center, and explore in the science center. They learn through play and by doing. Most of our daily instruction is in small groups using many different hands-on materials. Technology plays an important part in our classroom.
My Project
Coding (also called programming ) is telling a computer, app, phone or website what you want it to do. Years ago when I first heard of coding I thought it had no application in my everyday life. It seemed like a very abstract concept. Fast forward several years and now some educators and experts are calling it the ‘new literacy’—a subject so important that every child needs to know the basics to excel in our rapidly changing world.
My young Kindergarten students can successfully begin to code with these fun Beebot robots, playing and learning at the same time.
We began coding in our classroom several years ago. We have used a variety of materials. The students have been the most successful with our one Beebot. They are able to code without having help from adults. I have realized that our class needs more of these robots. Won't you please help us add them to our STEM center?
