Busy As A Bee Engineering A Technology Solution For Farmers
My students need Galaxy Tablets, notebooks and a variety of supplies to research bees, create different types of flowers, and engineer a technology to help farmers pollinate the flowers from their crops.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I performance improvement school with the majority of our students participating in the free lunch program. For many of my students, school is where they have access to books, supplies, and other resources that support their academic achievements. Our classroom is a safe, learning environment where my students like to learn about topics that interest them--and one of these topics is the honeybee. Whenever a honeybee makes her way into our classroom, we have learned to be calm, turn off our lights, keep our door open and be quiet so she can make her way out, or if needed I capture her and release her outside. My students have asked why I do this which has led to very brief discussion about bee colonies collapsing. This in turn has led them to questions about bees and why the disappearance of bees matters.
The value of honey bee pollination to agriculture in the United States is more than $14 billion annually because bees help pollinate many of our crops such as apples, pumpkins, and cantaloupe; with this project my students will learn about honeybees, and then engineer a solution to help farmers pollinate their crops.
My Project
My students see honeybees in our garden, and on occasion help me safely help any bee outside that makes her way into our classroom. My students' initial tendencies were to scream and try to run away out of fear, but over the year, they have come to understand that we shouldn't fear bees, but respect them. This has led to so many questions: "How do you know that this bee is a female? What are those yellow things on its legs? What is the bee doing inside the flower? How do they make honey? How are baby bees made? Where do bees find the wax they need?"
My students want to learn more about bees, so with your help and this Orkin challenge, I want to create a STEAM unit to help them do so.
Using the tablets, my students will research to gather different information about bees and Colony Collapse Disorder. Then they will create a presentation of their choice to share and present to others about what they learned. Concurrently we will study Georgia O'Keefe's flower paintings. Her artwork will become a source of inspiration when my students then use the craft supplies stored in a cart to make different types of flowers, allowing us to review plant structures and functions (a 5th-grade science standard). Once their flowers are made, my students will be presented with an engineering challenge. Using their notebooks, they will design, create, and test a technology to help a farmer pollinate flowers from her crops because there are fewer bees to do this important job. Once all designs have been tested my students will decide which technology created did the best job, and they will have a chance to improve their original design.
