My students are all African-American and most are diagnosed with Intellectual Disability. Their ages range from 12-14 and they are 6-8 graders. They are the most lovable children at my school. Most of them lack parental involvement in their studies which is another strike against them.
My school is located in the middle of two rivalry gang territories, and I fear for their safety everyday.
The neighborhood is primarily low social economic status and made up of single parent homes.
My students love to read! I have a Cozy Corner with a reading carpet, but our beanbags are old and flat. Students use the Cozy Corner when they have finished assignments to relax and read. Our book shelves are stocked with leveled reading materials that are enjoyable to all ages.
My students need new beanbags!
They will give our Cozy Corner a new look and new place for students to read. It's rewarding to see students taking the initiative to read independently. We also use the beanbags for story time. We all gather on the reading carpet to enjoy stories being read, and a question /answer session follows to check for understanding. It is the best time of the day!
My students and I are grateful to all the generous donors!
