Help me give my students an industrial sink and faucet to clean coffee pots and an espresso maker and flavored syrups to expand our menu and gain experience making specialty drinks at their student run coffee shop.
The students in my class are preparing to transition into adult life. Practical, hands-on activities help them truly master new skills. They have started a coffee business that gives them a chance to practice vocational, social, and math skills. The coffee shop gives them the opportunity to gain work experience while providing a valuable service to the school!
In our low-incidence cluster program, students have disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
Students stay in the program until they are 22. They participate in academic as well as functional classes and spend part of their day preparing for jobs after high school. In these classes, they explore careers and work on social skills for the workplace. They are most successful when they are able to use these skills by participating in classroom jobs and projects.
My Project
For the last three years, my students have been operating a coffee shop that makes coffee, tea, hot chocolate, iced coffee, and lemonade to sell to teachers, staff, and visitors at our school. Along with making and selling drinks, student workers are responsible for cleaning the coffee shop each day. We need a new industrial sink and faucet to clean our coffee pots and materials to expand our menu.
Using an industrial sink/faucet and making flavored espresso drinks will give my students experience that will benefit them in a variety of jobs once they leave high school.
They are eager to expand our menu and their skills while making lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas! These materials will help us increase our coffee shop sales and the students' talents, abilities, and confidence!
