This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Karr is the top-performing open-access charter high school in New Orleans. Our students come from every corner of New Orleans- from the Eastbank to the Westbank and the Lower 9th Ward to Uptown. We also have an outstanding 3-PEAT state-championship football team, a world-known "Team Bust 'Em Up" marching band, and remarkable academic programs. Additionally, over 80% of our scholars qualify for free and reduced-price lunch and we service a broad special-needs population and a very rapidly growing English Language Learner (ELL) population.
However, our students are far and beyond these statistics.
They are also eager readers and intellects. Books in their laps and hands bring so much joy to their lives, while also exposing them to new ideas, enhancing literacy skills, and encouraging them to put away their all-encompassing electronic devices.
My Project
Our students and the many children who live throughout our community love to read! The only thing they love more than getting lost in a good book is sharing literature with others who embrace the same eagerness for reading. However, due to cuts in school funding, books are becoming more and more inaccessible to our learners.
Our book sharing library will be located near one of our school bus stops, so students can pick up, drop off, and swap books for their school bus rides.
They will also be used by other neighborhood children and adults, as a way to encourage and embrace reading as a whole community. To keep our bus stop library clean and tidy, disinfectant wipes have also been included in this project. Plus, a selection of books in Spanish and Coretta Scott King Award-winning books have also been included in this project to help our students read books about their own cultural history, as well as other cultures. Furthermore, thanks to the New Orleans Public Library and other generous donors, we will be given limitless amounts of books to keep it fully stocked.
