I am a counselor at Howard Area Alternative High School in Chicago. The alternative high school is an many cases, the last stop for a student who has not been successful in a traditional high school for reasons ranging from having children to truancy to chronic absenteeism. In a recent survey of our students, we discovered that 3 of our 86 students self-identified as homeless. Another 5-7 students are in unstable housing arrangements (living with friends, relatives, etc.) An additional 10 students could be considered as at-risk for becoming highly transient. Transportation is one of the major issues confronting these students; if a young person is living on the south side of Chicago during the weekend, for example, it is difficult for them to get to the alternative high school on the far north side. None of our funding sources provide transportation assistance for students, homeless or otherwise. Many times, the school is the only place for the student to feel safe, get two healthy meals (breakfast and lunch), and receive the academic and counseling support they need to be successful in school. I am requesting grant assistance to purchase approximately 30 days' supply of transit cards to assist these students as needed in emergency transportation situations.
