At our high school, my students are among the kindest and most energetic people you will ever meet. My students enter the classroom and the practice field from all over the world, many of them here for the very first time. They work hard and do their best to succeed in the hectic world that is high school.
However, they have many obstacles to overcome.
For many, the only food they eat is provided during school. They travel many miles home from school and from practice, and often cannot afford the $1.35 bus fare. They face many challenges, from rough neighborhoods to affording school supplies, running gear, and more. To top it off, they compete in athletics against many of the most affluent schools in the state, where students do not have to worry about any of the challenges that my students do.
My students are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful and to go the extra mile, but they need the tools to help them do it.
My Project
The number one factor that impacts student participation in athletics and other after-school activities at our school is a lack of transportation options. Students must walk to school if they live within 2 miles of the school, and there are no activity buses after practice. While high schools in surrounding towns have activity buses and a steady stream of parents picking up their children after school, ours does not.
This project will help level the playing field, as city bus passes allow students to stay after school and participate in athletics and other activities that enrich their high school experience.
