Bus 'em to the bard

A trip for 40 students to the Shakespeare Festival Production of "As You Like It", including round-trip bus, costs $903, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

The students I teach in Caldwell County are often reluctant when we begin to study Shakespeare in class. However, that attitude usually diminishes once we get into the story, especially since our approach is always out of our seats and onto our feet. I have discovered that most of the students have rarely experienced live theatre and have never experienced a professional performance, especially of Shakespeare's works. With the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival held just about an hour and a half away, we have the perfect opportunity to experience Shakespeare's plays as they were intended - live. I believe this inspires a genuine appreciation for his works and increased receptivity to studying other plays. During the 2005 season, we have the opportunity to attend a performance of "As You Like It," one of the delightful festive comedies. The Schoolfest performances are only twelve dollars for students. We would have the additional expense for the bus and driver from Hudson to High Point (about 100 miles at .91 per mile). I estimate that I would be teaching about 40 seniors in the fall, and that we would be studying Shakespeare's "Macbeth" soon after. The chance to experience the play, to contrast the Shakespearean comedy (so much more accessible for students) to the tragedy, and to learn the value of cultural experiences would be valuable to my students.
