Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello, my name is Stefan Liotchev, and I am the PE teacher in Durham, NC. My students better know me as Coach L. The school is a magnet school that houses an international baccalaureatte program, in which students in grades K-12, have studies dedicated solely to learning Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, implemented into their daily curriculum. More than half of the students are on free or reduced lunch programs. As such, the school qualifies as a Title 1 institution.
Despite their modest home resources, the students at my school are truly humble individuals, who are motivated to learn through the enthusiasm and energy that they exude!
This is displayed by the enthusiastic acknowledgements I receive from my students. These acknowledgments could be as simple as giving me a fist bump, to enthusiastically asking me what the next lesson that will be taught by me will entail.
Whenever the students leave from class, it provides a humbling feeling when I've captured their hearts through the smiles on their faces that they exude. Especially when I hear about a child incorporating a game, or a concept learned in class, such as eating more fruit, outside of it, that is truly heartwarming.
My Project
The vast majority of my students hail from low income households where opportunities for extracurricular sport and physical activity are severely limited to them outside of school sponsored ones. One of the most popular physical activity pastimes seemingly anywhere you go in the world, is children riding some form of manual powered transportation device, whether it be a bike, roller blades, or scooters.
All children should be able to experience riding some form of these manual powered devices.
By having these scooters, many opportunities for outdoor PE lessons will exist, along with students having an option to scoot at recess!
Research has shown that the more diverse a PE education a child receives, the more likely he/she is to find his/her niche, and be inclined to take initiatives to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
