I am in my third year teaching special education. This is my second year teaching the CARES K-2nd grade program, which serves the highest need special education students in our district. Our students have a variety of disabilities that interfere with their education, which requires specific teaching strategies that allow them to learn based on their strengths.
My students work hard every day to learn, and as teachers, we work hard to meet their varied and ever-changing needs, but have to meet basic needs first.
My students are often hungry, and with a late lunch require a daily snack. Most of our parents struggle enough at home and are unable to help, leaving it up to teachers to provide snacks so that our kids can learn.
My Project
Our kids often do not get breakfast before school. They are all offered breakfast at school, which sometimes they eat and sometimes they do not. Our students have the last lunch of the day, which is a long time for their small bellies to wait between meals. As part of our scheduled day, we have a snack time.
Snack time not only gives the students fuel to learn between meals, but it is also a chance to work on eating life skills in a non-hurried natural environment of the classroom.
My students have a snack and a drink daily, and they are not provided by the school or parents. It comes from the teacher's pocket. We recently had a Quill project for snacks funded, but now we need drinks!
This project asks for a variety of drinks to go with snacks. Apple juice, orange juice, grape juice, and some juice boxes are requested so that students have something to drink. Just like snacks, drinks help students practice valuable life skills (opening straws, containers, not spilling etc). It also helps keep them going until lunch.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Schaffner and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
