Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Stay in your seat." "Sit still." "Stay focused on your work." "Sit in your chair like a 3rd grader." All these things and more are said countless times to students each and every day.
My students are hard-working, fun-loving students who are lucky if they get gym once a week.
Over 90% of my students qualify for free lunch. Teaching a special education inclusion room, many of my current students are diagnosed with ADHD and struggle to maintain their focus. Even though they struggle, they want to work hard and succeed. As their teacher, I want to make this possible for them and support them in every way. Many of my students need the ability to move and work, not only to help them focus but allow them to burn calories and stay healthy as they learn.
My Project
We are on a 6-day rotation schedule for specials, meaning that my students are lucky if they get gym once a week. Add in a 15 minute recess once per day, if they get outside on time and if the weather allows which doesn't always happen in New England, and it is easy to realize that my 3rd graders spend very little time outside exercising and the majority of their time sitting in a seat in the classroom. With these Hokki stools, students will be able to move as they work, burning calories and increasing their learning!
To stay healthy, students need to keep moving!
With time constraints on recess and the once every six days they spend in gym, teachers need to be creative to keep them going. With these Hokki stools, my students will keep moving to stay healthy but also improve their focusing skills so they are completing their work to the best of their ability at the same time!
