I'd like to introduce a classroom pet into my Kindergarten classroom. I teach in a full-day setting at a school which is steadily increasing in its lower socio-economic level and non-English speaking student population. Animals are so endearing and inviting to children, no matter what their backgrounds, and I think this would be a great way to bring my students together. I already have a bunny and a temporary cage that's been donated. What I need is a much larger cage on a wheeled stand. I also need some type of pet "play yard" fencing to section off a small grassy area for the bunny to be in a natural environment every once in a while. If I could get these two items from a donor through this proposal, the students and I could come up with creative ways to get the consumable supplies from now on. I chose this project because it's something that can last for many years and affect many children. I teach 15-20 children each year. There are many, many ideas for using the bunny as a topic in cross-curricular teaching. I would use the pet to motivate and engage youngsters in lots of developmentally appropriate activities to cover most of the Kindergarten basic skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I really would like to see this project funded because I truly believe it could create a cooperative and collaborative classroom of caring, life-long learners.
