Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an all-girls school in Austin, TX. As our name implies, we are a Young Women's Leadership Academy. We encourage leadership through team building activities. We are a Title I school and 98% of our students are low socioeconomic and free/reduced lunch.
They truly enjoy participating in sports and being a part of a team, but they feel inadequate when they see the sports equipment taped together with athletic tape.
For many of our girls, this is the first time they have played on a team sport in their life.
My Project
The use of necessary equipment is needed for effective practices. We practice 1.5 hours after school each day. Having the portable carts will help us use our time more efficiently in practice and during games. We currently have a broken cart, where students run from one location to another to get balls. It takes additional time setting up the gym for practice and games. The portable carts, we are requesting, can easily be moved from one end of the court to the other. Having more practice time and being able to include more drills during practice will help athletes develop their skills at a faster rate.
Students often feel less than adequate when competing against schools who have proper and working equipment.
Game balls that show the spirit of our team will help promote team pride. It's important for our athletes to have the necessary equipment to help improve their low self-esteem, which will also enhance their desire to improve their athletic skills. Easily accessible equipment will help boost team confidence as athletes prepare for competition.
