This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Mariachi Rayos del Sol de THMS is a school-based student mariachi that has existed since the early 1970s as an after-school club. In the 1992-1993 school year, this club was offered for the first time as an actual class within the curricular school day as an alternative to orchestra, band, and choir. Now in its 31st year, this mariachi program currently includes over 100 students and has served as a way for them to learn music while fostering deep connections with their cultural heritage, music, and history through the study of mariachi music.

In the past 10 years, this ensemble has gained more notoriety in the Tucson community and has been invited to perform for many public and private events while giving students the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with community members, educating them about the rich cultural and musical history of Mexico, as well as its influence in the United States.

Through their performances they not only demonstrate their musical, technical, and expressive skills, but they also develop a sense of pride and confidence that stays with them beyond their high school careers into their adulthood.

Until now, students have performed at their events with no form of amplification as is customary in a "traditional" setting for mariachi ensembles. As their venues and audiences become larger, the group finds itself in need of amplification to enhance their sound, especially for voices and violins. This 16-channel mixer is the perfect solution since it is portable and relatively easy to set up at gigs. It will also give students an opportunity to learn other non-musical skills as they learn more about sound engineering and production by learning how to set up their own sound at their performances. Please help support our efforts to share our musical culture and heritage.
