Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One big happy family is our class motto and one of the ways we work to achieve that is through cooperative learning. Cooperative learning and problem solving are skills that are crucial in building a safe classroom environment and many of my students struggle with these skills.
I teach in an urban district in Wisconsin.
We are a K-8th grade school with a diverse student body. Most of my students live in poverty and come from homes where English is a second language. My students are extremely hard working and inquisitive 4th graders. They have a strong desire to learn and I am always trying to give them the resources they need to thrive academically.
My Project
I am requesting the book, "Bullying in Schools", 10 interactive literacy and math games for our SMART board, a leveled set of nonfiction books and a set of sensory balls. Many students in my class come from high poverty homes, which can lead to high stress situations in the home and learning how to handle that stress can be a skill they will use for the rest of their lives. Teaching students to work together and more importantly to resolve their own conflicts is a challenge in the 4th grade. These resources will enable them the opportunity to work together, to develop their sharing skills and teach them directly and indirectly how to problem solve effectively.
Teaching children effective ways to interact with each other and advocate for each other is crucial if we are going to help them discover their place in the classroom and community.
This project will help them to see that working together is sometimes more efficient and effective than working against each other.
