My students needs to watch the documentary, "Bully", to engage in an authentic dialogue about how to stop bullying in our school
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I work to help my students reach a fuller expression of their own humanity. No one can experience humanity when faced with the realities associated with being either the bully or the bullied. We need a conversation to unfold to push past the cloud of intolerance to reach the rays of acceptance.
Our students are African American, attending a public school in Illinois, where 98% qualify for the free/reduced lunch program.
They attend a school with a staff of dedicated professionals who work collaboratively to remove barriers which impede our students' potential for academic success. The reality is that many of our students have become desensitized by the violence they experience in their personal lives, and rather than naming their worlds, they end up replicating the very structures which hold them back. They need love. They need a voice to reclaim the sense of agency and motivation they have lost. They need a mirror to reflect the brilliance we see in them, and they need a space to make mistakes, and reflect, so they can grow.
The ability to take our 5th through 8th grade students to a screening of the documentary, "Bully," will allow our students to see the consequence of actions that live in ignorance--ignorance of a shared responsibility to offer words and a hand that builds self-esteem. In giving them access to the film, and subsequent dialogues and curriculum in school, we hope to shed light on this issue that affects so many of our students. Furthermore, we hope to give voice to those that are bullied, but also those that bully, understanding oppression, and our role(s) as oppressors or members of the oppressed, with a pathway on how we may reach to become the liberators and the liberated.

By supporting our project, you can take a stand against bullying and recognize that we as humans possess a quality that humbles and inspires--that given the proper tools, we can and will change.
