My students, like individuals everywhere, can be both the victims and perpetrators of hateful behavior. Bullying is a commonplace misbehavior that we routinely address in the hopes of promoting change. I want them all to understand how unacceptable it is to intimidate others.
My students attend a public high school in NY and represent a variety of backgrounds, income levels, interests and talents.
Our community is a small, tight-knit, honors-level school with a tight-knit population. Social activism and open-mindedness are a constant part of their curricula, and we encourage our students to be active and positive citizens. My students are very actively involved in programs, and my clubs and programs are filled each time I run a tolerance-promoting event.
My Project
In order to promote positive behavior and tolerance, I need funding to purchase 22 movie tickets to take a group of students to see the film, "Bully". We will meet and walk to the theater, seeing the film as a group. We will then meet another day afterward to discuss our reactions to the film and goals to promote anti-bullying at our school. Students will learn the dangers of bullying and their role in making school safe for all; they will be able to exact change in the school community.
This project is important because it supports open-mindedness, positive behavior and social activism.
Our students will soon be the leaders of our world as their generation rises to adulthood; projects such as this will enable them to be the change they wish to see in the world, as Gandhi said. This film is more than an afternoon trip, it will impact the way they think and treat one another for the best.
