Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bullying affects most children at some point in their lives, however it is most prevalent during adolescence. Bullying can cause low self-esteem, depression, uncertainty and anger and it is critical to connect to this age group because of the lasting damage bullying can do.
My students attend an inner city public middle school in NYC.
Our school building consists of 750 students. The demographic breakdown of the student population is: 53% Hispanic, 18% African American, 24% Asian/Pacific Islander and 5% white. Most of my students live in the neighborhood housing projects. Many are at-risk middle school students who society has failed. These are students who have fallen through the cracks of our educational system and society as a result of the overwhelming stress and adversity they face in their personal lives, whether it be from poverty, domestic violence, gang activity or drugs.
My Project
I believe taking my students to view the movie "BULLY" will have a profound impact on them. Bullying in schools is as old as any problem that plagues schools, and yet it is one of those cases that receives the least amount of attention. We as educators need to be vigilant in detecting the presence of the problem and we must unite and be strong in order to eradicate bullying. Students will easily relate to the movie since it documents the stories of real kids attending public school and they will learn that bullying is in fact a real epidemic in our country.
Ultimately, I believe that the movie "BULLY" will encourage kids to stand up to bullies, not stand by, and will reinforce the fact that everyone can make a difference when it comes to this critical issue.
I believe the only way to stop bullying is through education, and "BULLY" is a wonderful first step.
