My students need a laptop computer and books on bullying for a lesson on preventing bullying at school.

Can you remember what is it like to be bullied at school? How about the pain, tears, and anxiety it created for you? Sometimes school becomes a place of anxiety for children instead of being a safe haven for learning. Unfortunately, bullying is a problem for many elementary schools including ours.
My students attend a Title 1 school in a high poverty area of Tennessee.
My students are already facing the reality of living in a high poverty area that increases their susceptibility to anger, stress, frustration, and peer pressure. This leads to an increase of bullying in school. My students need to know how to deal with being bullied and how to not become a bully. Having books about bullying in our classroom will help to open up a class dialogue regarding bullying. We will be able to have an open discussion regarding how bullying makes everyone feel, including the bully. We will be able to determine why a bully acts in the way that he or she does. My class will also use a laptop to create presentations to share within our class and the other fourth grade classes regarding the negative effects of bullying. The fourth graders are creative and visual learners, therefore they need the opportunity to be creative in their presentations to have the full impact on our fourth grade students.
Having access to books about the effects of bullying will help to open up a classroom discussions concerning bullying. These books will provide an opportunity for the class to read about how bullying makes everyone feel. We will also be able to discuss bullying from the perspective of the bully. I believe this is important because students need to understand why a bully acts in the way that he or she does. This will prevent future bullying. My class will also use a laptop to create PowerPoint presentations to share within our class as well as the other fourth grade classes. These presentations will provide insights into the negative effects of bullying. The fourth graders are creative and visual learners, therefore they need the opportunity to be creative in their presentations to have the full impact on our fourth grade students. Books and a laptop help to provide my visual learners with the tools they need to understand and prevent bullying.
My students will be impacted by this project because they will be able to understand why bullying occurs, what they can do to prevent bullying, and how they themselves can avoid becoming a bully.
The fourth grade students will also have an opportunity to use the laptop to create presentations to share their new knowledge with other classmates. The books will be a great resource for our classroom as the students strive to discover more information about bullying.
