Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.”
~Ralph W. Sockman
My students come from diverse middle class families that encourage their children to value education.
My goal is to transform the way my students feel about school and provide them with a love for learning that will stay with them through college and beyond. I feel that the best way to teach children is to make them feel like they are having fun first. When teaching by this rule, students become actively engaged and invested in their learning.
My Project
Students face many challenges on a daily basis. It is hard enough to focus on the demands of growing academic requirements, without worrying about peer and social media pressures. However, our kids are facing the trials and tribulations of adolescence on a whole new level. The book "Bullying in Schools" will be used to educate students regarding what exactly the term "bully" encompasses, and how bullying affects perpetrators, victims, bystanders and witnesses, both short and long term. In addition, we will read the high interest series Cirque Du Freak and have class discussions regrading tactful ways to respect each other's similarities and differences. Students will use 101 Self-Esteem Games, poster paper and markers to create emoticons, compare and contrast, and for other visual activities that will promote sympathy and compassion towards others.
When high interest information is provided in a hands-on, able-to-relate fashion with tangible materials, students become engaged without even realizing that they are learning about complex topics.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this project. Your support will provide more than just a cool lesson for English Language Learners; it will also be a great opportunity to learn about gratitude. Thank you!
