My students need Crayola markers, composition notebooks, pens, rulers, and washi tape in order to create "bullet journals" to manage their time to keep track of long-term goals and projects for our AP Capstone program.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privileging of teaching AP Research (part of the AP Capstone program) this year. My students are a diverse bunch that attends an urban, arts-focused high school. In addition to being extraordinarily talented artists, they are engaged and gifted scholars who chose to pursue an arduous course that allows them to practice disciplined and scholarly research as they craft an academic paper and presentation that appeals to their interests and curiosity.
My students amaze me every day with the sheer talent they possess when it comes to their art and academic courses.
But, we face many of the same challenges as other urban schools, including limited resources. My students are tasked with a year-long project that is largely self-directed. Many of them will struggle with managing time, stress, and the rest of their course load. I work to create the most positive environment possible so that each of my students feels safe, validated, prepared, and ready to learn.
My Project
Bullet journals are a customizable and forgiving organization system. they can be a to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, and diary, but most likely, it will be all of the above.
Bullet journals will allow my students to better manage their time, keep track of deadlines and goals and learn to balance their many responsibilities.
The composition notebooks will be transformed into functional and flexible bullet journals through creative and purposeful layouts using pens, markers, rulers, and washi tape.
Each composition notebook will be customized by individual students for their specific needs and goals. The pens, markers, and washi tape will allow the students to really get creative, color code, and orgainze thier goals and deadlines. Let's get organized!
