I have the honor of teaching in a Title 1 school with a wide range of diverse, energetic and unique group of students. I also have the awesome challenge of a combined classroom of 5th and 6th grade kiddos! Most of our children come from low to no income families, struggling to meet the learning needs of their sons and daughters. Our community is small, yet caring and I am part of a family of educators that want to provide a safe, welcoming learning environment for these kids. Some of our kids have barely enough, some have no home at all. Every child has the right to learn and when doing so, to have all of the necessary supplies and materials they need to succeed. Our team of teachers and administration work hard every day to provide this for our kids with a limited budget. I want each of my students to be excited about learning while feeling they are safe and supported in a secure and comfortable place. Our district believes in reaching every child, every day!
My Project
There's a place for every item in our classroom! Flexible seating replaces the old-fashioned hard plastic chair and desk environment. Students focus and engage in learning with more energy and excitement when provided with a variety of seating options in the classroom. I've replaced all desks but for a few, with large and small tables.
As one of the flexible seating options, I will place exercise balls, which will help to decrease stress and increase focus, at the classroom tables.
The folding chair will be added to our classroom library for a comfortable reading spot. The floor pillow will be used in our "cool-off" corner, where students who are struggling with their emotions can go to take a few minutes to relax and re-group, so that they can go back to being successful in the classroom and with their peers. The under-the-desk bike pedals are for the tables that still have plastic chair seating, yet those students need some type of movement when working to relieve pent up energy and focus better as they pedal! The area rug will help seat many if not all of my 26 students during reading and writing workshop mini lessons as well as more seating options during independent reading time.
