This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As an educator in a low-income and high poverty school area, my students are faced with challenges that they have no control over. All of our students meet the federal poverty level with 100% of our students coming from low income families. All of our students are eligible for free lunch. My school is located in a low-income and high-crime neighborhood. My students are in danger daily while commuting to school. The majority of our students walk to school alone and I worry about them every day.
Although my students have a lot of factors working against them, they are still more than capable of learning and being successful students.
As the PE teacher, I work with all of the students in the building (kindergarten-5th grade). I have done my best to support their needs, but I am now in need of some assistance.
My Project
The food items that I selected will help my students focus on their learning and not the rumbling in their stomachs! We are in need of accessible snacks because those students that arrive late to school, miss breakfast and required to wait until lunch to eat. There are even students that are also in need of snacks for home on occasion. A lot students stay for after school activities or are late pickups. I would like for them to have a healthy snack to eat while waiting.
Having snacks in our classroom will allow my students to focus instruction and not worry about the rumbling in their stomachs or how much time they have until lunch.
Food is a basic need that everyone should have access to; especially children! I just want to create an environment where students aren't concerned about food.
