"Mr. B, why are the posters torn?" They travel between two buildings. "Mr. B, may I borrow a pencil?" Sorry, we have none. "Mr. B, why are we out of water?" The water cooler broke. With your support, I will be able to make our school a better place and provide positive answers to these questions.
My students in my school are like a family.
From beginning kindergarten to graduation, they stay together...like a family. My students are bright and charming students ranging from advanced placement curriculum students to students with learning disabilities. Since music is a team activity, they must work together as one regardless of backgrounds or grade level in order to succeed. They are a diverse group of city kids. They come from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam. They are all funny, sweet, generous, and engaging.
My Project
My students need laminating film to keep posters safe, pencils and a pencil sharper for writing, and water for drinking. Our water cooler began leaking and broke. Our students must now travel down 5 floors of stairs and then back up (no elevator) just to get a drink of water from the only working cooler. The water dispensers will allow us to have water on multiple floors. Our school was built in 1912, and you can't drink the water in the pipes due to lead. Having a water cooler on the 3rd and 5th floors will allow students to quickly refill bottles and not miss much instruction time.
Students use a lot of pencils! Class work, marking notes, and state testing causes them to wear down to nothing quickly. Pencils and a pencil sharper will help keep our students on task!
We recently received some posters and want to keep them looking like new, even though some travel several blocks between buildings weekly. We have an extremely old laminating machine; however, we are out of laminating plastic. This will keep our posters nice and clean to provide great references for students for years to come.
I have seen first hand how music can influence the learning of students at any age.
No student should have to walk 10 flights of stairs round trip to refill a water bottle, look at torn posters on the wall, or be without a pencil. Please be a partner in their experience by supporting our project and how it can be used to enrich the lives of our students.
