Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the opportunity to teach preschool students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in a low income area. Many of my students come from Spanish speaking homes which means they are learning 3 languages: Spanish, English and American Sign Language. They are all eager to learn and hunger for language.
Many times when my students start school, they have no way of communicating with their family, peers or teachers.
They enter school at the age of 3 which can be a scary transition. Some are ready to say good bye to mom and dad while others have a difficult time. My goal is to provide a adequate learning environment that provides the supplies they need to become successful in their learning.
My Project
With these two light tables, bricks and tiles, my students will experience STEM hands-on activities and experiments while being challenged to think critically, solve problems, and acquire the skills and language needed to enter a STEM-related field.
My students will be learning through their creative building structures which give them a sense of autonomy over their learning.
They will discover new obstacles, and this will make the lessons more meaningful for my students and allow them to become more engaged and excited to learn.
Becoming engaged in the lesson and activities will foster strong language opportunities for my students throughout the day. They will have to describe their structures through literacy opportunities as they draw a picture of their structures and obstacles or explain and describe it to staff and peers. My students will also gain language through interaction with peers and staff expressing and learning about different ways to build structures, letters and numbers. The more language (Sign language) they are exposed to while in school, the more they will feel safe and a part of the community.
