The library at my school was overlooked for a very long time. The shelves were dangerous and students had to stay in a small part of the library to protect them from falling panels in the ceiling. Recently, the library has been transformed to make the physical environment a safe place for young students to learn.
When I greet students at the busses in the morning, they happily announce, "I have library today!" Now that the space has been remodeled, I am excited to provide students with engaging materials.
Our school is considered a Title I school and over one-third of the population is on free or reduced lunch.
Despite challenges they face each day, the students bring a sense of wonder to the library. Students are innovative and love to use their imagination. When students visit the library and our newly created makerspace, they learn the benefits of working together and perseverance.
My Project
As students participated in Global School Play Day, I noticed turning off the screens and batteries allowed them to get back to the foundations of play. Using simple materials, students were learning valuable lessons in communication and sharing. Students need unguided time to become independent problem solvers. They were learning frustration, although uncomfortable, was a necessary emotion.
Working through a difficult challenge and discovering a solution replaced the frustration with a feeling of accomplishment.
I would like to offer basic building materials during their weekly time in the learning commons and even for indoor recess days. I'm requesting KEVA wooden plank construction sets and Roylco Straws Connectors sets.
Students will learn to cooperate and persevere. Although the planks might fall down, they will pick up the pieces and start building again.
