Building Wellness, Inside and Out, for Newcomer Students
Help me give my students clothes, hygiene products, and other basic necessities to increase their sense of wellbeing and stability, break down barriers to school, that will ultimately help them focus on learning English and building healthy.
My students are resilient and strong, and spunky, hilarious, and hard working. Their ages range from 11 to 18. All of them are learning English and recently arrived to the country, some as recently as 3 weeks ago. The majority are from Central America, mainly Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Others are from Yemen, Afghanistan, Vietnam, China, and Eritrea.
Of our population of newcomer students, many are unaccompanied immigrant youth, that is, youth under 18 who travel here alone without guardians, fleeing intergenerational poverty and often gang violence, in search of safety, asylum, and opportunity.
These young people often risk their lives leaving their home country through forced migration. Many are here to learn English and get an education. Some have to work part time to provide financial support to their families. Still others have suffered difficult traumas where they come from.
Despite the barriers they have faced, they are here, trying to "seguir adelante", or move forward in life. They face what any other normal adolescent may face in middle or high school, but have added layers of complexity in their narrative. And despite all of this, they are incredibly joyful and resilient.
My Project
My students need hygiene products and uniform clothes to support their basic needs. Many of our newly arrived immigrant youth are here without many basic resources. Some have food insecurity issues, and snacks throughout the day are helpful. These items will help remove barriers to getting to school and support with their transition into their new school and community.
We want to equip them with these things to help increase their safety, stability, and well being, so they can focus on learning English, building strong communities, and feeling a sense of belonging.
Many of our students commute long distances to school, often taking more than one bus and walk, rain or shine or smoky air from the recent fires in California. Instead of worrying about what they will wear or eat, or how they are going to pay for it, they can focus on their learning.
