My students have a variety of speech and/or language impairments ranging from autism spectrum disorder to learning disabilities which impact them socially and educationally. In addition to this, several of my students come from low-income households with little access to language and literacy resources. Despite the challenges they face, each one is motivated to learn and communicate. I strive to provide my students with a safe, nurturing environment where they can work hard to achieve their goals and form lasting relationships.
These materials will continue to enhance the vocabulary rich environment I strive to provide my students. They are noticeably more motivated and engaged when given the opportunity to use colorful hands on materials.
By placing materials such as these into sensory bins or pocket charts, my students grow eager for their turn to participate and share.
I have seen even the quietest students come out of their shells when given hands-on tools such as the theme boxes and storyteller writing box. Theme boxes and building language photo cards can be used to develop vocabulary by addressing skills such as describing items, categorizing, and making comparisons. The story teller box, sequencing cards, and “What’s Happening?” photo cards support formulation of descriptive sentences and narratives. There is no end to what my students are able to accomplish when they actively participate. I am thrilled to watch my students develop in to confident, expressive communicators.
