My students come from an urban community in California. Seventy-five receive free or reduced price lunch. We lack materials and supplies because of major budget cuts in the elementary public schools, which has made it a bit difficult and has forced us to use our creativity to teach. I have a diverse group of energetic first graders this year. They range from a few high performing to majority of low performing students. Yet, I am determined to provide students with meaningful learning experiences where they can acquire life long skills to be successful individuals.
My Project
There is the a wide range of abilities in my class this year, from advanced to special ed. To meet the needs of my students, I need to work with them in small groups. These materials would be a fun and enjoyable way for each group to work independently and review basic concepts, while I work with small groups to review lessons. With these materials, my students can practice skills they haven't mastered to build a stronger foundation for number sense. For example, students rarely get a chance to count anymore because it takes too long. These math centers give students opportunities to count and recount with a purpose.
