Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I campus located in Pasadena, which is an overall Title I district. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to go to Pre-K. As our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend another school. These programs at other campuses fill up very quickly.
Many of our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August/September 2017, and have had their homes and lives altered in unforeseeable ways.
Where there should have been the excitement for starting Kindergarten, instead other feelings overtook these families and kiddos.
My students were in school for four days before they were out for two weeks. Some lost everything and are still not in their home at this time. The school was able to give them back some sense of normalcy and safety. Their resiliency and desire to still learn is astonishing.
Overall, we are an amazing classroom family, and use our growth mindset to strive to be the best we can be.
My Project
Our classroom library is current a makeshift collection of materials we have. Having a Real Simple shelf to match the one we have will add a more aesthetic appeal to our classroom. Black book baskets would give us the ability to sort our books by topic or series, allowing us to easily find and access books we are seeking out. The faster my students can get a book in their hands, the more they can read!
Every teacher easily spends a fortune on their students and their classroom each year.
Having a magnetic board and magnetic materials such as coins, numbers, and writing templates would provide a much clearer view for my students while at small group. I am currently holding up a mini board and continually rotating it around the table so all have a turn to see. Having these materials easily visible will cut down time of trying to see, and increase engagement time. Needed with a dry erase board is of course dry erase markers. Being Kindergarten, we go through these markers like crazy and some days spend a good portion of our time saying "go throw that one away."
