Our room is a learning community made up of over 180 inquisitive, ambitious, eager and energized young scholars! They range from second through fifth grade. Every student in the program has been identified as being in extreme need of alternative instructional methods. As such, we go to second graders at their home schools, and 3-5th graders come from all over the district to receive our weekly challenge and enrichment program. Each student is a unique individual with his or her own strengths and challenges. I strive to create innovative learning opportunities that challenge them academically and inspire them to reach their high potential.
We emphasize collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking in our classroom, with the understanding that children learn best when they are engaged through playful experiences.
Our scholars love to explore concepts through simulations and hands-on experiences.
My Project
Hands-on exploration builds stronger brain connections than watching and hearing. With LEGO simple machines kits, our students will be able to build their own understanding of simple machines by building and trying out each kind of machine. After mastering the basics, they will have the opportunity to build and improve on the machines with their own creativity.
LEGOs can also be used to build understanding beyond science!
Our students will use LEGO bricks to construct their own ancient civilizations, determining the most important aspects to include, and simulating disaster along the way. They will build models of their own "companies," and plan a sustainable Mars colony. The sky is the limit!
