We are a preschool classroom consisting of two half-day sessions of fifteen 3- and 4-year-old children. We serve low income and at-risk families by providing a high quality free preschool. Many of our families speak English as a second language, so our students are learning English from their teachers and peers. Other students receive disability services through our program while at school. We are a very diverse classroom. All of our students are learning to have fun at school, to be kind to each other, and are getting ready to thrive in kindergarten.
My students are full of energy and are very curious.
They constantly amaze me with their eagerness to learn. For most of our students, our program is their first school experience, and, for some, it is their first experience having regular interactions with children outside of their family. This year will set the tone for years of learning ahead, so we want our little ones to realize that fun and learning go hand-in-hand.
My Project
My students love to build! We spend a lot of time building with blocks, designing houses for our animals, garages for our cars (and anything else you can imagine). Unfortunately, we don't have enough of each material for more than a couple of students at a time. I'd like to increase what we have so that more students can plan and we can practice social interactions!
Students who are able to learn by doing with others not only have more self-confidence but also increase their problem-solving and social-emotional skills!
This project will not only help us develop our building creativity but increase our social-emotional, fine motor skills and problem-solving skills as well. These design centers and materials will encourage students to practice what we are teaching them without them realizing how many amazing skills they are learning because they are having so much fun!
