Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to make and build things. They can take an old pretzel container and build a jet pack or a bunch of Popsicle sticks and engineer a bridge that holds more than 20 pounds. They surprise me with their creativity and ingenuity every day. Many of them are learning English here in America for the first time. All of them come from a high poverty neighborhood, but that doesn't stop them from being excited to participate in my K-8 STEM classroom every time they walk through the door.
My Project
Do you remember playing with blocks and Legos as a kid? If you were like me, you spent endless hours creating, imagining and learning how the world works. Every child should have a chance for this type of learning and discovery. I'd like my classroom to be a place where students are always able to explore, create and write their discoveries in journals.
With these tools, my students will not only understand properties of geometry, engineering, 3D design and physics but will also develop social skills, be creative and have fun!
This hands-on experience gives students a foundation of writing, math and science skills as well as a chance to imagine their future career in engineering.
