My students need building materials! "Play is a child's work" couldn't be more true; my students learn best through hands on learning. These legos, knex, magnetic blocks and more will be well loved!
I am a first grade teacher, living in a small town with big student needs. They come from diverse backgrounds and are often struggling with more than academics. Nonetheless, my students are full of energy and potential!
I strive to create a safe and engaging classroom where they feel loved and develop a love for learning.
Teaching students how to read is one of my greatest joys as a teacher. I love giving students the confidence and tools to decode text, create meaning, and share their thoughts! In our classroom, everyone is a learner and everyone is a teacher.
My Project
I can't teach, if they don't come. Attendance and tardiness was an issue at our school last year. I want to want my students to come to school.
Giving students the opportunity to build, invent and work together with their peers first thing in the morning will motivate them to come to school on time AND set the stage for a positive learning environment the rest of the day!
These building materials will be used for morning "work" and integrated with our reading, writing, math and science curriculums. I know they will become a favorite in the classroom and an option during inside recess and "choice time".
The magnetic blocks and straws/connectors sets will allow students to build models of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes we study. They will be able to see, count and compare the faces and vertices. They can sort by property - stack, roll, and slide. They can form composite shapes, too.
The legos and knex will be used with task cards, where students are given challenges to work together to create a variety of vehicles. They will use science concepts like friction and motion to test/record its speed and weight.
The wooden blocks will be used to create structures like houses and bridges. During our fairy tales and folk tales unit - students make a house for the 3 little pigs. We use a hair dryer to simulate the big bad wolf to see if their construction can withstand the wind.
When students are building, they brainstorm, problem solve, communicate, collaborate and Perservere- all valuable skills needed to become successful lefelong learners!
I love that my school supports the well rounded child; thank YOU or supporting my students' curiosity and creativity as well.
