Building the LOVE of Reading with SSYRA Jr. Books.
My students need books from the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books list. The books are chosen based on their various high interest topics, appeal, and connections to curriculum.
Our school is located in an area that is constantly expanding, drawing new families into our community daily. Currently our school serves over 1100 students in grades pre-k through five. This year our school-wide motto is “SOAR” (Successful Otters Achieve Rigor). I am lucky to teach in a school where teachers, students and parents work together to create students who are College, Career, and Life Ready.
My second grade classroom is like a family of 19; it's filled with a lot of encouragement, happiness, and love.
My students are dedicated to their learning and strive to do their best on a daily basis. They love school and learning; and that invigorates and motivates me daily to give and do everything I possibly can to help them learn and grow.
My Project
As a former STEM teacher, my classroom is in desperate need of books! According the the SSYRA Jr. FAME website, "The mission of the SSYRA Jr. program is to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State Jr. books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students are encouraged to listen to these books be read to them, read them in a small group setting, or read independently to develop skills in fluency and comprehension. Students will be eligible to vote in the spring after listening/reading at least three of the books. The winning author and illustrator will be recognized at the annual FAME conference."
