I teach in a Title I school. The majority of students at my school get free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students come to kindergarten without preschool experience. Therefore, we start at the beginning, teaching basic letter identification, and by the end of kindergarten they are reading!
My students have hard lives outside of school, but the minute they step into my classroom they know that they are loved.
They know they are there to learn and become the successful individuals that they can be.
I teach in a Title I school, where most students are just learning to speak English. There are over 30 languages spoken by the families in my school and this project is a great way to help me provide the families (many of which are new to the country) resources that they can read with their children to build the bridge between school and home. Many of my students have very few books at home to read. These magazines will serve as a connection that my students can make from school to home. They include topics on social sciences, science, reading, robotics, and current events.
These classroom magazines will provide my students with current, engaging reading material that they WANT to read.
Not only will they look forward to reading them, they can take them home to read them to their families and teach their families about current events.
These materials are truly the only opportunity that my students have with this kind of nonfiction reading and school-to-home connection.
