Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember having a dollar when you were younger and thinking that you could buy everything your heart desired? How long did it take you to come to the realization that a dollar does not go very far?
I teach kindergarten to English Language Learners that hail from a high-poverty neighborhood.
Due their parents' financial situation, it is imperative that my students begin to learn about financial literacy at an early age. However, in order for them to be financially literate, we must have resources that help build a solid foundation in financial literacy first.
My Project
The magnetic counters will help me give my students hands-on experiences during our math classes. Since they are so young, the best way to keep them engaged is using multiple approaches to their learning. Every morning, we will practice important math concepts using our math games at out math centers. When reading books about math, we will use our highlighter tape to focus on sight words, which they will be exposed to for the first time this year. We also need word spacers to help them as they practice number and word writing. Finally, we need colored ink to replenish our classroom printer, which is used to print assignments, our class currency, and/or pictures.
Since my students' families often struggle to provide even basic supplies, it is difficult to get additional resources that will help keep my little kinder friends engaged as the year progresses.
With these resources, my students would learn rudimentary skills necessary to build a solid foundation for financial literacy.
