Building the Financial Literacy of High School Students!
My students need a library of books regarding personal finance to allow them to complete research projects and follow up on personal interest topics. Most public and school libraries do not have these.
My students come from all different backgrounds. We have families who value education above all else all the way to families in so much crisis that education takes a back-burner position in their priority list. Our students have a huge amount of potential and often don't realize this potential due to lack of opportunity from financial circumstances.
Personal finance education doesn't seem to be happening in the home and it's my goal to bring that to them in as much detail as possible to help break the cycle of financial hardship that seems to dominate a high portion of our community.
We are not considered a Title I school, but we (the staff and administration) suspect that we should be, but families are not willing to fill out the paperwork for it.
My Project
In my personal finance class, students will be encouraged to follow up on topics (within the large realm of personal finance that interests them). We will be accessing blogs and podcasts using existing resources, but books provide so much more depth and detail, and encourage reading as a source of learning for the future!
I plan to allow students time every week to pursue learning more about the topics they find interesting such as stock market investing, saving, life-hacking, minimalism, frugal living, real estate, entrepreneurship and so on.
We are helping to teach the skills we missed in high school!
