My students need GeoSmart GeoSpheres, K'NEX, Play-Doh, and craft supplies to extend their reading and creativity through building and design with STEM bins and STEM challenges!
We are an excited group of 2nd graders in two classrooms who will be glad to share these materials! Our school is a Title I school with demonstrated needs in reading and math literacy. Introducing STEM as an extension of our regular curriculum will give our students a hands-on experience with planning, design, construction and problem-solving. All skills that they will carry for a lifetime! We look forward to making connections between literature and our life! Becoming confident in our skills will boost all areas of our learning!
My Project
STEM education does not have to be boring and stand alone in curriculum! In our 2nd grade classrooms we look forward to a regular STEM block in our school day this year as an extension of our math and reading learning. By setting up manipulative STEM bins the 2nd grade will have many opportunities to put their math and reading learning into practice!
Plan, design, build, fail, review, question, rebuild, experience and succeed!
All of these steps are what building the basics of STEM are made of! We have requested many different types of building materials, including simple items like craft sticks and VELCRO, dominos, and 1 inch cubes which will be the basics for our STEM activity cards and challenges. Additionally, we have some more unusual building materials on our list too! Items like magnetic blocks and K'NEX blocks will let our designs really come to life!
A partner project by my co-teacher will allow us to bring many STEM related literature selections into our classroom libraries. These books, along with the materials in this project will be shared by the two 2nd grade classrooms! We intend to use the lamination and binder rings to create our library of task cards and challenge cards for easy access for the students. Additionally, we have requested large chart paper to allow collaborative planning and design to be drawn out as part of the process!
We are so excited for this project and cannot wait to share student learning and creation with our families!
