Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you created something that you were really proud of? At first, it might've been a little challenging. With practice over time, your confidence increased and you actually enjoyed yourself. I want to help my students build their confidence through water color art.
My students are hard working and intelligent sixth graders.
It is extremely important to them to bring home grades that they are proud of. Some of them travel from very far just to be a part of a school that has a reputation for high academic standards. While some can go at a faster pace, others spend up to 3 hours a night doing homework. Their interests and learning styles are just as diverse as their cultural backgrounds. They are kids from all backgrounds coming together for a dream to succeed and have a better life for themselves.
Many are optimistic about their future. They know that they have to do well in order to make it. That is why the high stakes testing mentality and doing well in class puts pressure on them. The pace is fast, and the rigor is supposed to challenge them. All of them have felt the stress of having to perform well at one time or another; some more than others. It is a lot to live up to.
This is why art is so imperative. It transforms.
My Project
Art transforms a tensed up grin to a relaxed smile. At the end of the day, the energy in the classroom becomes relaxed and the kids feel free to express themselves and explore their creative side. The class, as a whole energetic force, takes on a lighter mood, and there is a balanced happiness that floats upon the air.
So far, the kids have been creating manga sketch books using pencil, white drawing paper, and color pencil. One day, I saw a manga watercolor demonstration and became inspired. "That can take their art work to a whole new level! What an awesome technique."
The very next day, I showed the students a downloaded demo of manga water color technique. All eyes were focused, engaged, and curious to watch what the artist would do next. They were so transfixed and fascinated. They made comments along the way, and were pleased at the artist's final product. It inspired us all to want to see more. I could tell they really wanted to try it for themselves.
Why does education have to come down to the haves and the have nots?
Every child deserves the same opportunity to access education. Yet, unfortunately, even down to the elementary level, education is not accessible. Students who have talent are not provided with the tools to encourage their potential. Please help open that door a little wider. I believe that art is a powerful tool that can unleash creative talent and reinforce self confidence; especially in those that crave an outlet.
