As a Gifted Endorsed fourth grade teacher, I have the privilege of including the gifted students in my homeroom for most of the day. This means that I have a broad range of abilities in my class. Reaching them on their level requires a balance of curriculum and interest. All of them love a challenge, though.
My students' interests lean more towards non-fiction, dog lovers abound.
My students have a variety of academic and socioeconomic needs in a growing diverse neighborhood. There is parent involvement this year, but I'd like to increase more interaction through enthusiastic students. I must meet their intellectual, essential, and affective needs.
My 26 second grade students appear to be like sponges this year, listening and absorbing information on any topic. They sit like statues whenever I am reading aloud to them. When we were learning about ordinal directions on a compass rose, you could have heard a pin drop. Then they wanted to go back to their seats and finish an illustration that only had the cardinal directions on it. I believe I can use this interest to take their knowledge further.
My Project
This year, I would like to use Scholastic News to ensure that all of my students have access to fresh informational text. This resource provides nonfiction text that is perfect for young readers. As it is a weekly periodical, students are able to learn about current events as well as many interesting animals, and events from the past.
Providing students with this amazing resource will allow them to gain information that it would be otherwise difficult to consistently present.
Thank you so very much in advance for your support and for helping to impact the lives of these amazing children.
