I am the teacher of 26 awesome students that come from low income families. Many of them have no access to technology at home. But every morning when they get to school they are able to take turns on the computer in small groups of 4 per day during morning work practicing reading and math skills.
When I began with them in the middle of their 1st grade school year they had 3 teachers leave before I got hired.
I brought them stability, encourage, and fun within their learning. Since then I have looped up with them to 2nd grade & now going into 3rd grade next year. They love technology and thrive on it. They are a vibrant bunch who love to explore, move, discuss, and be challenged to excel socially and academically. The school they attend is a title one school that deals with a very transient population of students dealing with homelessness, foster care, low income, uninvolved parents and many other societal issues out of their control. In addition, there is a high population of students with behavior disorders. Within in my class I have ELL students, a variety of learning styles, and multiple learning levels. They are challenged each day to do their best, participate & they receive incentives for reaching their goals. My students are eager to learn and come to school each day.
In my class I use several software programs and I even pay for one out of my pocket. I use a software called Class Dojo for classroom management in which a few assigned students are able to help with the management of the class as a job. The students will be able to use the tablet to keep track of the Dojo and not have to use my phone. I also use MYON which is a reading program. My class was awarded by the school for most books read on this program school wide. Lastly the program I have been paying for myself is called Scootpad it is a program that allows me to assign student specific math, ELA, & writing assignments based on the common core standards in which they are challenged to do at home (which several can not do) and during morning work within groups of 4 per day. With the tablets I would be able to have more students working on these programs during small groups and have the ability to integrate technology.
This will help my class tremendously by allowing me to have more students at a time working independently on their daily skills using the programs I mentioned above.
They will be exposed to the daily use of technology and learn more about ways to use technology to help them in reading & math. This year these students will be learning to use flash drives, create power points and learn typing skills. These tablets will assist in the increase of literacy and math skills within each student.
