The students in my class are coming from low income homes. Many of the parents are unable to provide simple school supplies for their child. For most of the students, they are starting school for the first time in their life. They entered the classroom with huge smiles and eagerness to learn, but it breaks my heart when more than half of the students do not have the supplies needed for success. It's amazing how the ownership of a pack of crayons or markers brings joy and motivation to a young child!
Every year I set a goal to continue to build strong readers in my classroom. In Kindergarten, the students are expected to read and comprehend by the end of the school year. Due to the students' backgrounds, many do not have the privilege of owning books at home or even visiting the library, which would help increase their reading skills. By providing books in the classroom, students will have a greater access to the needed materials. The level readers will help build students' reading skills as well as their confidence. Students will use the books during small group instruction to independently read or work with the teacher to further decode books to increase reading skills. Nothing is better than the joy of being a successful reader!
