Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the fundamental aspects of humanity is our ability to communicate with each other about our wants, needs, thoughts, ideas, emotions, and opinions. As a speech-language pathologist, I work to ensure that my students have access to their academic and social environments through improving their communication skills. I currently work with students between the ages of 3 and 10 years old.
Each student presents with unique needs and difficulties, and it's my job to figure out how to motivate them, engage them, and improve their skills.
Some of my students are working on producing certain sounds, to help them be better understood; some of them are working on using functional vocabulary, like 'more', 'help', and 'go', and some are working on higher level language skills such as making inferences. More than anything, each of them has thoughts they want to share, and I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to help them communicate!
My Project
My library at school is comprised mainly of 'hand-me-down' books from previous teachers or speech-language pathologists. While I'm thankful for their contributions, my reading repertoire is quite limited and generally consists of science oriented books. These book sets will not only expand my tiny collection, but will also give me the opportunity to adapt my books as needed for my students. Many of my students do not yet have strong reading skills and would benefit from modifications that would allow them better access to the story. For example, I would be able to add picture icons for those of my students who need visual support to answer comprehension questions, or highlight/underline vocabulary words to foster vocabulary growth.
Literacy and story-telling skills are strongly linked to children's communication abilities, which makes books great therapy tools!
Additionally, my students are often less interested in stories because they have difficulty reading and understanding the material in them. These book sets have been specially curated for the age groups that I work with, ensuring them to be engaging for my students. Expanding my library, and adapting books for my students' needs, will hopefully encourage them to pick up more books on their own!
