Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are eager to engage in new learning opportunities and different ways to represent content, but due to budget cuts, the small size of our district, federal and state restrictions, district funding does not always stretch as far as it is needed.
The student mathematicians, writers, readers, scientists, artists, musicians, athletes and makers in my small district are inquisitive, hands-on learners that love new opportunities for learning and exploring.
We are a very diverse district so the majority of the students in my small district (only 2.5 square miles) are English Language Learners and many families are below the poverty line. Approximately 95% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
As a committed and passionate teacher, I am dedicated to making differentiated learning opportunities as meaningful and relevant as possible so my students not only grow academically, but also gain confidence and build necessary skills such as communicating, collaborating, critical thinking, creativity, and compassion. I am always looking for new avenues for supporting the student learners with new methods and resources that are a critical component to the learning process.
My Project
As part of an integrated approach to incorporating STEM and STEAM (Science, Technology/Tinkering, Engineering, Art, Math) in the classroom, students need to be involved in learning opportunities that allow them to experience trial and error, as well as the importance of failing forward to aid in the development of computational thinking skills. These skills can be developed and strengthened through exposure to a variety of visual and hands-on learning activities. The brain games in this project will not only provide students with opportunities to develop skills, but also build their confidence and stamina while engaged in deep thinking. These brain games will help my students understand how creativity and perseverance are imperative in problem solving. One of our class mantras is that doing hard things makes our brains grow, so these games will help them engage their brain cognitively in a fun way!
As part of the learning evolution provided through these resources, the 6Cs (Collaboration, Communication, Content, Critical Thinking, Creative Innovation, and Confidence) are embedded in the learning process to create a fun and meaningful experience.
The Rush Hour, Temple Trap, Temple Connection, and On the Dot games will give students the chance to develop patterning, aesthetic visualization, and a variety of mathematical applications. They will also be used to challenge critical thinking in ways that will allow the students to engage and think deeper as well as explore basic concepts that are taught in STEAM class. All of the resources will allow students to have an opportunity to construct designs, solve problems, and work together to build confidence while growing their brains!
These brain games for STEAM class will provide unique and sustainable learning experiences that are adaptable, engaging, and help students not only make meaning out of content, but also learn critical problem solving techniques.
