My classroom is made up of 25 eager, energetic, hard-working, and awesome first graders.
I have an inclusion class where there are a variety of needs, learning styles, and developmental levels of the students.
They come from many different backgrounds, where many of them have had difficult obstacles to overcome already at an early age in their life. Several of them really lack the confidence needed to work toward their full potential. Many of them find it incredibly challenging to focus and pay attention throughout the entire school day. Our school is a Title I school and has a large low-socioeconomic population, which means there is a large percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunch. Some of them do not always come to school with the things they need to help them be successful.
My Project
First grade is a huge year for learning. Students are expected to become independent readers and writers. Students are learning to read and comprehend a variety of genres. They are also beginning to develop their own stories in their writing. I am requesting lego sets that will help to encourage the mastery of these skills with an added emphasis on the arts and hands on learning.
It is my goal for this project to allow my students to become artists and designers through expression, creativity, and engagement.
The legos will allow them to construct various settings with characters and then retell the story in sequential order. The picture cards that accompany the set will help provide them with characters and settings which they can use in their writing! To my supportive donors thank you for joining me as I merge the arts with literacy and writing!
