My amazing third graders are creative problem solvers that love to make, create, and build. We live in a rural community on Northern California. Our student population is diverse and comes from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some of my students have traveled the world and others have never left this small town.
We have a small group of amazing parents that volunteer their time and money to help make our school a better place.
Due to recent budget cuts, it's not always enough. As a second year teacher, I have very limited resources in which I can make available to my eager creators. Due to the fact that many of my students live a very sheltered and rural lifestyle, I feel obligated to prepare them for the big, unfamiliar and unpredictable world outside of our small county. The passion and creativity that comes alive in them when they are building is truly inspiring. I want to feed this passion so that they leave here ready to take on the world.
My Project
My amazing third graders will make and create with anything that they can get their hands on. As a new teacher with very limited resources, I feel bad that I do not have the same supplies as my colleagues that have been teaching for decades. I recognize building bricks as a versatile medium that encourage the critical thinking and problem solving skills that our students need to be successful in the future.
My students would love to acquire a collection of building bricks to use during directed S.T.E.A.M projects as well as during unstructured exploration.
We have asked for a variety of basic building bricks to lay the foundation for their engineering projects. We have also asked for some specialty kits, like wheels and doors, to help inspire more challenging and creative creations. In addition to building bricks, I would like to provide my students with some books to help inspire them and fill their brains with ideas.
